DANCE ME TO THE END OF TIME: TOWARDS A SCOBY SKIRT
My preliminary experiments with creating fungi textiles.
Fungi and bacteria by-product of Kombucha making process, these SCOBYS were dried, oiled or not, and I am now experimenting with ways to make them hydrophobic (waterproof). I would love to make a skirt of these discs. I experimented with bigger formats and with longer fermentation times. With a bigger surface, I did initially get a much bigger and thicker SCOBY, though once it was dried, the resulting textile did not prove to be any thicker, and was much more brittle than the smaller ones. I used green (caffeine-rich) tea and a combination of honey, brown sugars and white sugars, and I used store-bought organic ginger kombucha for my starter. If you’d like to learn more about the Future Food Salon 3: Voyage to Anthropocene, which is the project that inspired these experiments, please visit futurefoodsalon.com. Together with the SIRENS, I will be performing in “Voyage to Anthropocene: Future Food Salon 3”, once COVID allows for robust, shoulder to shoulder affairs.
